While many of us have not seen withdrawal first-hand, I’d bet that several of us have seen it in movies or television. A person hunched over on the floor, sweating and clenching their stomachs. Shaking hands. Paranoia. Relapse. Efforts at detoxifying the body from drugs and alcohol are oftentimes met with relapse because, without a certified detox program, the side effects of quitting “cold turkey” are too much to handle.
Detox programs are designed to safely guide patients through their withdrawal period with medical supervision. Detox programs aren’t implemented only to give comfort to those going through withdrawal – they are sometimes medically necessary. Lasting from two to ten, or more, days, detox programs can be lifesaving for those addicted to alcohol, benzos, and opiates.
In Psychology Today’s article, Alcohol, Benzos and Opiates – Withdrawal That Might Kill You, author Ade Jafe, Ph.D. discusses the withdrawal symptoms and side effects of quitting these substances “cold turkey.”
